Punctum

Single channel film, 4K, colour, stereo sound, 8’44, 2026, UK

Film Stills, Punctum (2026). Copyright the Artist.

Punctum is set within the museum's storage facility, where staff examine and discuss objects from the collection. The film unfolds from the imagined perspective of the artefacts themselves, approaching the archive through a non-human viewpoint embedded within the storage system.

As histories are handled, preserved and interpreted, the work reveals the archive as a space of both knowledge and speculation, where fragments of the past are continually reconstructed through present-day encounters. Bringing together parallel strands of local history, Punctum draws attention to incidental details, unexpected connections and the ways personal and collective memories become intertwined. Borrowing its title from Roland Barthes' term for the detail that unexpectedly pierces our attention, the film invites viewers to consider how objects continue to speak across time through the gestures, voices and acts of care that surround them.
